Cogent Staffing are recruiting on behalf of our established distribution client for a Shift Supervisor to join them on a permanent basis. Joining an established team and carrying out Shift Manager duties in the absence of the Shift Manager, the successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and an ability to multitask as well as think on their feet.

The role:

  • To carry out shift manager duties in the absence of the AM/PM shift managers.
  • Duties include effectively managing the day-to-day operation of the department including the supervision, continuous improvement and support of operators, warehouse teams and driver teams.
  • This includes the allocation and bookings for items.
  • Ensuring all vehicles are complying with weight restrictions and able to allocate collections accordingly to ensure this is followed.
  • During times where the AM/PM shift manager is not on leave, provide first class customer experience support to active customers and members of the public.
  • Make sure teams are complying with all ppe requirements whilst carrying out roles for the company.
  • Reporting and escalation (if required) of any dangerous occurrences or near misses.
  • Ensure full adherence to all company operating policies and procedures.
  • Ensure a safe working environment across all shifts falling in line with health and
  • safety standards and company policies.
  • Handling of breakages, spillages, and any other damages
  • Liaise and support fellow shift managers effectively communicating to ensure all operational aspects of the department are covered.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping across all areas of the operational team including offices, warehouse, vehicles, and yard.
  • Manage vehicle collision investigations and reporting.
  • Monitor and manage team performance, time keeping, attendance, overtime, sickness ensuring the operations manager and payroll are informed as necessary.
  • Maintain healthy relationships with key suppliers and customers where necessary.
  • Vehicle defect monitoring and scheduling of necessary repair for HGVs, rigids,
  • XLWB, LWB and Luton’s.
  • Monitor agency compliance and carry out any inductions upon entering site.
  • Carry out daily walk around checks for all vehicles covering damage and cleanliness (including FLTs, pump trucks, HGVs, trailers, rigids, XLWB, LWB, Luton) booking repair/maintenance work and reporting in line with the escalation ladder.
  • Create a positive, helpful culture amongst the operational operators, warehouse and driver teams.

  • Always ensure that the premises and any operated vehicles are secured.
  • Any other duties within the individuals’ capabilities.
  • Safety of yourself and security upon arriving to shift as will be lone working for a period.
  • Effectively routing all runs complying with weight limits, space, and timed deliveries
  • Communicate any actual or expected issues and other pertinent information with PM shift manager in handover period.
  • Oversee driver brief monitoring driver loading, ppe requirements, etc
  • Oversee 100% success of the evening sortation ensuring trunk vehicles leave the depot on time
  • Oversee the evening debrief ensuring all customer collections are collected and address any issues as they arise.
  • Ensure timely loading and leaving of trunks
  • Communicate any actual or expected issues with AM shift manager on email handover.
  • Ensuring the security of the building before leaving ensuring, fire doors, alarms and security doors are checked and locked.

The candidate:

  • 3+ years of experience in warehouse operations, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in warehouse management systems (WMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and operate warehouse equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
