The Environmental Warden will deliver an efficient and effective service to fulfill the Council’s statutory duties regarding Dog Control, Animal Welfare, and the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act. The role involves educational, promotional, and advisory activities aimed at enhancing the health and wellbeing of residents. The Environmental Warden will support the Lead Environmental Warden and the Environmental Manager in the performance of their duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out educational, promotional, and advisory duties related to dog control and environmental health, adhering to departmental work programmes set by the Lead
  • Environmental Warden.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public, elected representatives, and various statutory and non-statutory bodies.
  • Participate in local and regional partnerships aimed at improving community health and wellbeing.
  • Undertake dog control duties in compliance with legislative requirements and operating procedures; ensure humane treatment and return lost dogs to their owners.
  • Respond to animal welfare complaints and assist the Animal Welfare Officer as needed, ensuring compassionate treatment of all animals.
  • Conduct investigations under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act as per legislative and procedural guidelines.
  • Manage the collection, receipt, and custody of all financial transactions in accordance with Council procedures.
  • Maintain a Council vehicle in clean condition and report mechanical faults to the Lead Environmental Warden.
  • Organize daily workloads to meet agreed targets, ensuring a quality and customer-focused service.
  • Perform duties outside normal hours as necessary for efficient service delivery.
  • Handle confrontational situations according to the agreed policy on lone working.
  • Prepare and serve legal notices, present cases in court, and attend hearings under the direction of the Lead Environmental Warden.
  • Comply with Health and Safety legislation and Council policies including safeguarding and equality legislation.
  • Ensure high standards of customer care in all services and communicate effectively to enhance the Council’s public image.

Essential Criteria:

Qualifications & Experience

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade A-C, or an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent.
  • At least one year’s relevant experience in dog control and/or enforcement, including:
  • Control and handling of dogs
  • Managing contentious situations
  • Communicating effectively with the public
  • Applicants lacking the above qualifications must possess 2 GCSEs (Grade A-C, including English) and three years of relevant experience.

Knowledge

  • Proficient use of IT systems and software relevant to the role.
  • Understanding of legislation related to environmental and animal welfare.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Awareness of political sensitivities with an ability to maintain neutrality.

General

  • Full and current UK driving license and access to a vehicle or alternative means of transport to full fill job duties.
