Undertake building maintenance painting/decorating work for Belfast City Council, reporting to the Area Contract Manager (Building) or other relevant officer, either alone or as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out the full range of painting and decorating tasks safely and to standard.
  • Use and maintain painting tools and equipment (e.g., ladders, brushes/rollers, trays).
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding; work safely at height.
  • Prepare surfaces (external/internal) and apply finishes (undercoat, gloss, emulsion, varnish/stain/glaze).
  • Repair and treat defective surfaces (cracking, flaking, blistering).
  • Hang wallpaper and wall coverings (including Muraspec as required).
  • Ensure safe handling/storage of thinners, diluents, and materials.
  • Follow painting schedules/specifications and council procedures.
  • Support reactive and planned maintenance across council properties.
  • Identify, order, and collect materials as required.
  • Complete job paperwork and participate in performance management/billing procedures.
  • Support coaching/training for new staff, contractors, temporary staff, and apprentices.
  • Drive council vehicles as required; maintain safe working practices.

Essential CriteriaQualifications / Licences

  • NVQ Level II in Painting and Decorating (or equivalent).
  • Full, current driving licence for Northern Ireland (or access to transport to complete duties).

Experience (must be demonstrated with specific examples)

At least 1 year’s relevant experience in each of these:

  • Surface preparation and safe use of relevant equipment/scaffolding.
  • Decorating/paining in a building & maintenance environment.
  • Demonstrating H&S adherence as part of practical work.

Shortlisting (additional criteria)

Council may shortlist only those who, as at closing date:

  • Have 2 years’ experience in each of the three areas above, and
  • Have NVQ Level III (or equivalent).
